Jaguars Injury Update: Toby Gerhart, Johnathan Cyprien

By on 9/09/2014 11:52:00 AM

Toby Gerhart signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the off season to be their featured back after being a terrific complement to Adrian Peterson in Minnesota. In his first start with the Jags, Gerhart left the game, but returned to grind it out, with a sprained ankle.

Per Michael DiRocco of

Rule 2: The Jaguars have a small set of rules by which they abide. The second of those rules is no whining and no complaining. That's what running back Toby Gerhart quoted when asked about the ankle injury that forced him from the game in the second quarter. "It was definitely really sore," he said. "No Rule 2 violators here. I went out there and tried to give it my all." Gerhart returned to the game and finished with 42 yards on 18 carries.

Safety Johnathan Cyprien also left the game and did not return after suffering a head injury. Also via Michael DiRocco of

Cyprien left the game late in the first half after his head hit the turf while he was breaking up Nick Foles' deep pass intended for Jeremy Maclin. Cyprien lay motionless on the turf for a moment while teammates waved for trainers.

Gerhart will need to take it easy for a couple days, let the ankle heal, and hope to recover enough for week two. Sprained ankles can be a lengthy recovery, depending on the severity. Jordan Todman and Denard Robinson will likely get more touches if Gerhart can't go.  As we all know the NFL has a protocol for head injuries, so Cyprien will have to pass all the standard tests and be cleared prior to competing this weekend.
