Mariners Injury Update: Chris Young to make start

By on 9/05/2014 07:15:00 PM

Seattle Mariners pitcher Chris Young will make his scheduled start on Saturday against the Texas Rangers despite some concerns about his health, reports Dave Sessions of

No specific injury has been made public, but Young has been shelled in his last two outings and already thrown 150 innings for the first time since 2007. That led to some concern from manager Lloyd McClendon, but he deemed Young fit to start after watching a bullpen session on Wednesday.

Young has far exceeded expectations for the Mariners after signing just four days before the start of the season, totaling 12 wins with  a 3.46 ERA (4.474 FIP).Seattle’s pitching staff has kept them in the playoff race, led by the trio of Felix Hernandez, Hisashi Iwakuma and Young at the top.

The 35-year-old missed all of the 2013 season after surgery to repair thoracic outlet syndrome, which left his career in jeopardy.

Seattle trails the Detroit Tigers by half a game for the second AL Wild Card and will need to use the next three games against a decimated  Rangers squad to gain some ground.
