By on 9/10/2014 06:00:00 PM

As reported earlier, Washington Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond left Tuesday night's game against Atlanta Braves with back tightness. He's getting the day off for the finale Wednesday, along with third baseman Anthony Rendon, who is down with flu-like symptoms, according to Mark Zuckerman of Nats Insider.  Danny Espinosa is in the lineup at short with Kevin Frandsen taking third base.

Neither ailment is serious, said manager Matt Williams. Desmond has appeared in 140 of the Nats' 143 games, slashing .248/.303/.415 (OPS+ 97) with 22 homers, 82 RBI and 18 stolen bases. Rendon is hitting .279/.342/.462 (OPS+ 112) with 18 homers, 77 RBI, 15 stolen bases and a league-leading 103 runs scored.

Anthony Rendon

Rendon, 24, was the Nationals' 2011 first-round draft pick, making his debut April 21, 2013 and hitting 265/.329/.396 in his rookie season. Rendon signed a four-year $7.2 million contract with the Nats ($6 million bonus) that pays him $2.7 million in 2014. He is pre-arb and under team control through 2019.

Ian Desmond

Desmond, 28, was drafted by the Montreal Expos in 2004 (3rd round) and made his debut for the Nationals September 10, 2009. He was named to the 2012 All-Star Team and won a Silver Slugger award in 2013 when he hit  .280/.331/.453 (OPS+ 115) with 20 homers and 21 stolen bases. He is signed to a two-year $17.5 million contract that takes him through 2015, at which point he will be eligible for free agency.
