Padres Injury Update: Joaquin Benoit could return later this week

By on 9/15/2014 12:00:00 PM

The San Diego Padres open a four-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies tonight coming off an 8-6 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Padres dropped to 68-80, third in the National League West. There is some good news on the injury front, as reliever Joaquin Benoit could return later this week, barring any setbacks.

Our own Keri Carbaugh reported on August 30 that Benoit was experiencing shoulder soreness and was expected to be out for a few days. Those few days have turned into weeks.

Corey Brock, who covers the Padres for, tweeted the following on Benoit's status.
Benoit, in his 13th Major League season, is 4-2 with a 1.58 ERA this season. He's allowed only 28 hits in 51 1/3 innings with 60 strikeouts and only 14 walks. The veteran reliever has pitched for the Rangers, Rays, Tigers and Padres and has a career record of 48-37 with a 3.96 ERA.
