Padres Injury Update: Will Venable exits with back strain

By on 9/11/2014 07:00:00 AM

San Diego Padres outfielder Will Venable made an early exit during Wednesday's loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, coming out of the game in the fifth inning. Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweeted that Venable was removed because of a back strain, and was likely to miss at least the next two games:
The Padres did not release any further information on Venable's injury, but Michael Lananna of did note that he almost made an outstanding catch diving for a Carl Crawford double earlier in the game, so it's possible Venable jarred his back then. Cameron Maybin came in to play center field in Venable's place.

Venable is having a very disappointing season, the worst of his seven-year career. His .223/.286/.319 line with six home runs and nine steals still isn't the worst showing amongst the alarmingly large group of Padres flops this year, but coming off a year in which he hit 22 home runs and stole 22 bases, with an OPS close to .800, it's an awfully big dip in production.
