Panthers Injury Report: Cam Newton

By on 9/07/2014 11:00:00 AM

The Carolina Panthers only have one player listed on their finalinjury report heading into the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Unfortunately for Carolina, that player is quarterback Cam Newton:

Newton will be a game-time decision as he attempts to play through hairline fractures in his ribs. He appeared to suffer the injury in Carolina’s third preseason game against the New England Patriots, limiting him in practice over the past two weeks.

If Newton is unable to go, Derek Anderson will start in his place. Anderson last started a game in Week 13 of the 2010 season.

After putting up over 4700 yards and 35 touchdowns in his rookie season in 2011, Newton’s totals have dipped slightly, but he has continued to put up strong numbers. Newton led the Panthers to the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs a year ago.

Newton will be challenged this year by offseason losses at wide receiver and along the offensive line.
