Panthers Injury Update: Cam Newton game-time decision

By on 9/06/2014 11:50:00 AM

The Carolina Panthers appear to be in a tough situation going into Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They could be without quarterback Cam Newton, and there isn't much depth behind him. The next guy would be Derek Anderson.

Newton suffered a fractured rib in week three of the preseason vs. the New England Patriots. He dove to the ground and was hit by linebacker Jamie Collins. The team has been carefully managing the injury since then, but Newton's week one start is still in jeopardy.

According to the Panthers' twitter account, Coach Rivera said he's 'not leaning either way', but Newton "did take the next step." That suggests that Newton is very close to being ready to play, but it very well could come down to a few hours before kickoff.

The Panthers will be in trouble without Newton, because they're going up against a strong defensive line. Newton's a tough player, so I'd expect him to suit up week one. This will have to be a close call for the fantasy players out there, though.

For the fantasy players: Sit Cam Newton this week. He's going to be chased all game long if he plays, and he might be trying to protect his ribs when there's pressure around.
