Panthers Injury Update: Cam Newton ready to play

By on 9/11/2014 12:00:00 PM

Carolina Panther's star quarterback, Cam Newton, was a late inactive on Sunday while nursing a rib injury. On Wednesday, Newton was in full pads and it looks like the young signal caller will be ready to roll in week two.

Gregg Rosenthal of reported:

Carolina Panthers Coach Ron Rivera indicated after the team's Week 1 win that Cam Newton should return to the field for the team's home opener Sunday against the Detroit Lions

That's great news for the Panthers. During training camp there was talk that Newton was going to be a bit more a pocket passer after coming off an ankle injury he battled all of 2013. The Panthers were smart in allowing Newton to have the week off to allow him to heal fully, and backup quarterback Derek Anderson performed admirably in his absence.

As is the case with all dual threat quarterbacks, staying away from injuries is priority number one. With the running ability Cam has, he is often making plays with his feet, leading to him taking some big licks. As he matures as an NFL quarterback, I would expect Newton to learn to avoid those big shots more, but an injury to these types of quarterbacks always looms.

Keep an eye on the official injury report leading up to Sunday's game with the Detroit Lions.
