Panthers Injury Update: Cam Newton hopeful to play Week 1

By on 9/04/2014 12:30:00 PM

With offseason ankle surgery behind him, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton suffered a hairline fracture in his ribs during the team's third preseason game. There have been lingering questions about his status for Sunday's season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, despite assertions from Newton himself and head coach Ron Rivera, but all indications are Newton will play and he remains hopeful to do so despite not practicing on Wednesday.

Even in a best-case scenario Newton will surely be limited in practice right up until an official designation of his status comes on Friday. The team is hoping the rib soreness that kept him out on Wednesday will subside enough for him to participate on Thursday, and if he is able to practice Newton looks certain to start on Sunday.

Assuming he plays, and it's safe to assume he will barring something unforeseen, Newton will almost certainly wear a flak jacket to protect his ribs during Sunday's game. That is not unprecedented, but Newton's overall effectiveness and ability to run is likely to be limited.
