Panthers Injury Update: Cam Newton inactive against Buccaneers

By on 9/07/2014 03:32:00 PM

The Carolina Panthers will be without their starting quarterback for the team's opener. Cam Newton's rib injury will keep him out of action against Tampa.

The official word from the team confirmed an earlier report from Fox's Jay Glazer, who said Newton would not play today. Derek Anderson will start for the Panthers.

Newton cracked his ribs in a preseason game two weeks ago and did not practice fully this week. He was limited in practice Thursday. While he did participate more Friday, the team decided the risk of a more severe injury was too great to play him today.

This will be the first game of Newton's career he will not be active for. In three NFL seasons, Newton has completed just under 60 percent of his passes for over 11,000 yards and 64 touchdowns.

The Panthers take on the Detroit Lions next week, which could be Cam's first game of the 2014 season.
