Panthers Injury Update: Cam Newton expected to play vs. Lions

By on 9/08/2014 06:00:00 PM

Despite being without quarterback Cam Newton on Sunday, the Carolina Panthers were able to start the season with a 20-14 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A lingering rib injury limited Newton in practice throughout the week, so it made sense to hold him out if there was any doubt about his ability to perform at a high level. Derek Anderson filled in capably in the victory, going 24-for-34 for 230 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions while also doing his best Newton impersonation with 10 rushing yards on three carries.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Panthers' head coach Ron Rivera said he expects Newton to start next Sunday against the Detroit Lions. That is not too surprising, since Newton nearly played on Sunday, but having a week off can only help him be closer to full strength and remove some risk of injuring his ribs further.

Having Newton back and fully healthy is obviously the best scenario for Carolina going forward, but if something were to happen to him the team looks like it can stay afloat with Anderson under center.
