Pirates Injury Update: Charlie Morton undergoes hip surgery

By on 9/27/2014 06:00:00 AM

The Pittsburgh Pirates entered the final weekend of the regular season with a record of 87-72, second in the National League Central. The Pirates will enter the post season behind a balanced offense that is 10th in the Major Leagues in runs scored and 7th in ERA. On the injury front, pitcher Charlie Morton underwent hip surgery and could miss the beginning of next season.

I reported on September 25 that Morton,  who had been on the disabled list since August 18 with a sports hernia and hip inflammation, was placed on the 60-day disabled list.

Rob Biertempfel, who covers the Pirates for, tweeted the following update on Morton.
Morton, in his seventh Major League season, is 6-12 with a 3.72 ERA in 26 starts. He's allowed 143 hits and walked 57 in 157 1/3 innings, while striking out 126.  Morton has pitched for the Braves and Pirates and has a career record of 36-61 with an ERA of 4.50.
