Pirates Injury Update: Pedro Alvarez likely done for season

By on 9/11/2014 11:15:00 AM

The Pittsburgh Pirates improved to 76-69 on the season following a 6-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. The Pirates are three and a half games out in the division and tied at the top of the wild card race. It appears they will have to make their playoff push without Pedro Alvarez, who is likely done for the season with a left foot injury.

Our own Rose Ingberman reported on September 9 that Alvarez, who has been dealing with a sprained left foot since diving for a ball on August 26,  was feeling more pain after a pinch hit at-bat on September 5.

An update on Alvarez, as reported by Travis Sawchik of, is that he will likely be out for the remainder of the regular season. The Pirates announced on Wednesday that Alvarez has a stress reaction of the fourth metatarsal of his left foot. The expected recovery time is four to six weeks.

Alvarez, in his fifth Major League season, is batting .231 with 18 home runs and 56 RBI this season. He's coming off back-to-back 30 plus home run seasons and has a career batting average of .235 with 104 home runs and 324 RBI.
