Pirates Injury Update: Russell Martin still battling hamstring tightness

By on 9/27/2014 10:00:00 AM

The Pittsburgh Pirates improved to 88-72 on the season following a 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday. Gaby Sanchez hit his seventh home run of the season for the Pirates, while four Pirates pitchers scattered 11 hits and struck out seven. There was some concern on the injury front, as catcher Russell Martin, who has been battling tightness in his hamstring, left the game for a pinch runner.

Our own Darius Austin reported on September 25 that Martin left Wednesday's game with tightness in his left hamstring and may need a day or two rest.

Travis Sawchik, who covers the Pirates for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, tweeted the following on Martin.
Sawchik also tweeted the following quote by manager Clint Hurdle, assessing Martin's condition.
Martin, in his ninth Major League season, is batting .290 with 11 home runs and 67 RBI in 111 games. The veteran has played for the Dodgers, Yankees and Pirates and is a career .259 hitter with 119 home runs and 540 RBI.
