Pirates Injury Update: Russell Martin expects to start Wild Card game

By on 9/30/2014 06:15:00 PM

The Pittsburgh Pirates have good news heading into Wednesday night's win or go home wild card game, as three time all-star catcher Russell Martin is expected to be back in the lineup after dealing with a hamstring injury.
While Tony Sanchez and Chris Stewart are reliable backups, this is huge news for the Pirates to be returning their veteran catcher.

Martin not only had a stellar year batting .290 with 11 home runs and 67 RBIs, but he also has playoff experience.  Last season he was the star of the Pirates wild card matchup against the Cincinnati Reds going three for four with two homers in the Pirates 6-2 win.

This year will mark be his seventh postseason appearance. Overall, he has hit four home runs and driven in 16 during his playoff runs.  As a free agent this upcoming offseason his playoff bat could be a showcase for a new contract.  His return could bring the leadership that they need to go a long way.
