Pirates Injury Update: Starling Marte exits after HBP

By on 9/12/2014 09:15:00 AM

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Starling Marte can be added to the list of Thursday's HBP victims, coming out of the 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies after taking a pitch to his left elbow. MLB.com reports that Marte was hit by an A.J. Burnett breaking ball in the second inning.

Manager Clint Hurdle suggested to MLB.com that Marte was unlikely to play Friday. The outfielder had his elbow iced in the clubhouse following the game. Gregory Polanco came into the game in Marte's place, with Travis Snider moving over to play left field and Polanco taking Snider's place in right.

After a disappointing first half in which he hit .256 with a .708 OPS, Marte has caught fire in the second half, hitting .353/.430/.594 with most of that production coming after he returned from the concussion DL in early August. He has already tied last season's mark for doubles (26) in 76 fewer plate appearances, and needs just one more home run to reach 12 again. With the Pirates battling to hold on to a wild card spot, and potentially still beat the Cardinals to the NL Central crown, Marte's speedy return could be crucial.
