Raiders Injury Update: Matt Schaub returns to practice

By on 9/04/2014 10:15:00 AM

The Oakland Raiders are going with rookie Derek Carr as their starting quarterback for Week 1 against the New York Jets, as Matt Schaub struggled during the preseason (24-for-47 for 218 yards with zero touchdowns and one interception in three games). Schaub was diagnosed with tendinitis in his throwing elbow in late August, which made the decision to start Carr fairly easy after his strong showing in the preseason finale.

After some speculation that Matt McGloin would be Carr's backup on Sunday, Schaub was a full participant in Wednesday's practice and is now expected to be No. 2 on the depth chart for Week 1 and probably beyond.

Carr is clearly the Raiders' quarterback of the future right now, and it's possible he plays well enough to start all 16 games this year. But as Oakland goes through what looks likely to be another dismal season, the possibility of Carr suffering a significant injury and Schaub starting at least a handful of games can't be ruled out.
