Rangers Injury Update: Derek Holland scratched with migraine, won't start Sunday

By on 9/28/2014 01:45:00 PM

Texas Rangers left-hander Derek Holland was scratched from his Saturday start as the result of a migraine and will not be able to start Sunday either, after there had been some suggestion he would be able to do so. However, Holland could still come out of the bullpen in what is a crucial game in deciding the AL wild card standings, with Oakland just one game ahead of Seattle.

After Holland was scratched from Saturday's start, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram tweeted that the lefty could still start in Sunday's game if Oakland had failed to clinch the second wild card spot:
Prior to Sunday's game, Anthony Andro of Fox Sports South-West confirmed that Holland would not be able to start, as the lefty had told manager Tim Bogar that he wasn't confident he could pitch six or more innings.

Although Nick Martinez will get the start, John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group suggested that Holland could come out of the bullpen during the game. That will no doubt depend on whether the game is still close enough to be relevant to the standings. The Mariners will play just over an hour later than the A's, so it's unlikely that it will be clear whether the race is settled unless Oakland jumps out to a big early lead.
