Rays Injury Update: Curt Casali's season over after concussion

By on 9/25/2014 03:00:00 PM

Rookie catcher Curt Casali took two foul balls off his mask in Wednesday's 11-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox, and, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, suffered a season-ending concussion. Casali was replaced by Jose Molina.

Manager Joe Madden expressed concern over the Rays' lack of catching depth, with only two available catchers, both limited by injuries, and no other catchers on the 40-man roster.

Known for his defense, Casali, 25, hit only .167/.268/.208 (OPS+ 39) in 30 games, but Ryan Hanigan's sore toe and Molina's sore knee have gotten him playing time.

Casali was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2011 (10th round) and traded in March 2013 to the Tampa Bay Rays in lieu of returning their Rule 5 draft pick, Kyle Lobstein. Casali is on a 500K minor-league contract with the Rays.
