Rays Injury Update: Desmond Jennings not near return

By on 9/06/2014 09:45:00 AM

The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Baltimore Orioles last night by the score of 3-0. The win improved the Rays to 68-74 on the season. The Rays' pitchers combined for a six-hit shutout and stuck out 11. The Rays were again without center fielder Desmond Jennings due to a sore knee and there is no indication that he'll return to the lineup any time soon.

I reported on September 3 that Jennings, who was initially out of the lineup on August 29 with a sore knee, was not progressing despite having a few days off.

An update on Jennings, as reported by David Adler of, is that it doesn't look like he's getting much closer to returning to center field. His status has been day to day since he was first scratched from the lineup over a week ago. The soreness was caused by a bone bruise after fouling a ball off his knee before the All-Star break.

Manager Joe Maddon and trainer Ron Porterfield don't think Jennings can injury himself further by playing, but don't want him back in the lineup until he can tolerate the soreness.

Jennings, in his fifth Major League season, is batting .244 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI this season.  He had a career-high 14 home runs and 54 RBI last season. Desmond is a career .248 hitter with 47 home runs and 164 RBI.
