Red Sox Injury Update: Brock Holt, Will Middlebrooks

By on 9/10/2014 02:45:00 PM

Brock Holt and Will Middlebrooks were both out of the Boston Red Sox lineup on Wednesday as a result of the illness that has been going round the Boston clubhouse, as Alex Speier of WEEI tweeted.

Stephen Petrella of reported that Middlebrooks made an early exit on Tuesday, coming out in the fifth inning with nausea and lightheadedness. Holt did so last week and, perhaps also because he has been dealing with a stiff neck, still hasn't returned to the lineup. While he wouldn't say that there was a virus sweeping the clubhouse, manager John Farrell admitted to that the affected players were dealing with similar issues:
"To say that this is running rampant, I can't say that," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "But very similar symptoms."

Mike Napoli also came out of a game over the weekend citing similar problems, although he missed just the one game. Carlos Rivero got his first major league start on Wednesday at third base, while Jemile Weeks started at second again with Dustin Pedroia likely done for the season.
