Red Sox Injury Update: Dustin Pedroia to have surgery Thursday

By on 9/11/2014 04:30:00 PM

The Red Sox will lose their second baseman for the rest of the season they learned on Thursday, as Dustin Pedroia will undergo season ending surgery on his left hand. This news isn't shocking, as it was reported earlier in the week that the Sox might shut down Pedroia for the year to make sure he can be healthy for next year.
The 2008 AL MVP hasn't been himself all year, putting up a .278/.337/.376 slash line with 7 HRs and 53 RBIs, all career lows, excluding the 2006 season where he only played 31 games.

Its probably better for Pedroia to sit out anyway. The Red Sox will not take part in the playoffs this year, but they believe they have a chance at competing next year. They will need Pedroia at 100% health in order to compete.

Its believe that Brock Holt and Jemile Weeks will take over at second base for the rest of the year.
