Reds Injury Update: Brayan Pena scratched with illness

By on 9/12/2014 10:30:00 AM

Brayan Pena was scratched from the Cincinnati Reds' lineup on Thursday with an illness. John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer tweeted that the catcher and first baseman would be replaced by Devin Mesoraco:
Mesoraco ended up catching another Johnny Cueto gem as the Reds shut out the Cardinals, 1-0. The team has not released any further information on Pena's sickness so it's not clear whether they expect him to miss another game or not.

Pena has split his time almost equally between first base and catcher this season. Joey Votto's quad injury has meant that the Reds have had to mix and match at the position, with Pena and Todd Frazier doing the bulk of the work there. Pena has also been giving Mesoraco regular breaks from catching, as well as acting as the team's primary catcher during Mesoraco's DL stints.
