Reds Injury Update: Joey Votto hitting off a tee

By on 9/11/2014 11:30:00 AM

The Cincinnati Reds improved to 69-77 on the season following a 4-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night. It's been a tough season for the Reds, who are 11 games out in the National League Central. It's also been a rough year for their All-Star first baseman Joey Votto, who has missed over half the year with injuries. He has started hitting off a tee and still hasn't ruled out returning before the end of the season.

I reported on September 8 that Votto was still feeling discomfort in his injured quad, but the Reds had not yet considered shutting him down for the season.

An update on Votto, as reported by C. Trent Rosecrans of, is that he's making progress in his return and took ground balls on Tuesday as well as hit off a tee.  Manager Bryan Price said that Votto felt better on Tuesday than on Monday, and while he still hopes to return in 2014, there is no timetable.
"His commitment to playing and our commitment to wanting to play is important. It deserves every attempt. If we said hey 'you can play in a week and play the last several days of the season,' that might be something we deem worthy as a stepping stone into 2015. To get him ready to have a single commemorative at-bat in the last game of the season isn't really the goal."
Votto, in his eighth Major League season, is batting .255 with six home runs and 23 RBI this season. The four-time All Star, league MVP and Gold Glove Award winner has a career average of .310 with 163 home runs and 553 RBI.
