Reds Injury Update: Joey Votto's return uncertain

By on 9/22/2014 06:30:00 AM

The Cincinnati Reds entered Sunday night's game against the St. Louis Cardinals with a record of 71-84, fourth in the National League East. With the Reds out of the playoff picture, there isn't much for the Reds to play for. All eyes are on Joey Votto, who continues to try and return from a quad injury, but his return this season remains uncertain.

I reported on September 18 that Votto started taking batting practice for the first time since landing on the disabled list with an injured quad.

An update on Votto, as reported by Mark Sheldon of, is that he will likely not be activated from the disabled list before the end of the season despite working out daily. He's been taking batting practice and ran the bases on Friday for the first time since the injury.

Ideally, the Reds would want Votto to play at least a few games before the end of the season, but whether or not that's a wise choice, remains to be seen.

Votto, in his eighth Major League season, is batting .255 with six home runs and 23 RBI this season. The four-time All Star, league MVP and Gold Glove Award winner has a career average of .310 with 163 home runs and 553 RBI.
