Rockies Injury Update: Nolan Arenado exits with chest contusion

By on 9/15/2014 10:15:00 AM

Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado did not make it through Sunday's loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, departing before the bottom of the fourth with what the team later described as a chest contusion:

Arenado told Thomas Harding of MLB.com that he actually originally hurt himself when diving for a ball during the previous series, in New York. The third baseman said 'it hurts to throw and extend' and is also in pain when he is driving his top hand down. He apparently aggravated the problem diving for a single in the second inning of Sunday's game. Arenado suggested to Harding that he may have bruised his ribs 'a little bit'.

The 23-year-old was a highly-regarded prospect who did not hit quite as well as might have been hoped in his debut year of 2013, particularly in the friendly confines of Coors Field, but showed off his elite defensive skills to win a Gold Glove. This year, he has proven he can be a valuable big-league regular on both sides of the ball. Arenado has a 115 OPS+ with 18 home runs and 34 doubles in 111 games, as well as being worth almost two wins defensively, per Baseball-Reference.com.
