Royals Injury Update: Christian Colon placed on DL

By on 9/18/2014 03:15:00 PM

The Kansas City Royals enter a weekend series against the Detroit Tigers just a half a game behind the Tigers for first place in the American League Central. With 11 games remaining in the season, the Royals are in good position for a playoff spot. To increase their post season roster flexibility, the Royals have placed infielder Christian Colon on the 15-day disabled list.

Our own Pete Schwichtenberg reported on September 5 that Colon still wanted to do whatever he could to play and help the team, despite having a broken finger.

An update on Colon, as reported by Dick Kaegel of, is that Colon was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to September 7.

Colon has a fractured distal tip of his middle right finger, which occurred when fielding a ground ball at third base.  The rationale behind the DL move was that if the Royals reach the playoffs and Colon is not healthy, the team could replace him with a player not on the 40-man roster before September 1.

Colon has appeared in 20 games in his first Major League season. He's batting .302 with four doubles, four RBI and two stolen bases.  In 491 Minor League games, Colon has a batting average of .281 with 37 home runs and 232 RBI.
