Tigers Injury Update: Alex Avila exits after foul tip to mask

By on 9/03/2014 11:00:00 AM

The Detroit Tigers defeated the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday by the score of 4-2. The win improved the Tigers to 76-62 on the season, half a game behind the Kansas City Royals in the American League Central. J.D. Martinez hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning to lead the Tigers to victory. There was a scary moment in the sixth inning when catcher Alex Avila had to leave the game after taking a foul tip off his mask.

As reported by Chris Iott of, Avila appeared to be momentarily stunned and feel back onto the dirt behind home plate after taking a foul tip off the mask in the sixth inning.

Head athletic trainer Kevin Rand gave Avila some initial tests behind home plate before removing him from the game. Manager Brad Ausmus replaced Avila with Brayn Holoday after Ausmus did not like how Avila was responding to questions from Rand.

Avila looked fine after the game and talked about what happened.
"It definitely rung my bell. I was a little dizzy out there and I think that's probably the main reason why Kevin took me out. … Once I came in here and started icing and everything like that, I felt much better."
Ausmus said Avila's condition will be assessed today, but it's not likely that he'll be in the lineup tonight.

Avila, in his sixth Major League season, is batting .223 with 10 home runs and 43 RBI. His best season was in 2011 when he hit.295 with 19 home runs and 82 RBI. Avila is a career .248 hitter with 61 home runs and 265 RBI.
