Tigers Injury Update: Alex Avila returns to lineup

By on 9/23/2014 09:45:00 AM

The Detroit Tigers fell to the Chicago White Sox last night by the score of 2-0. The loss dropped the Tigers to 86-70, a game ahead of the Kansas City Royals in the American League Central. With six games remaining, the Tigers still hold a good position in the playoff race. They saw the return of catcher Alex Avila, who had been out with a concussion.

I reported on September 17 that Avila, recently returned from a concussion, was still dealing with symptoms and again out of the lineup. The Tigers catcher has been held out since to allow those symptoms to clear.

James Schmehl, who covers the Tigers for MLive Media Group, tweeted the following update on Avila yesterday afternoon.
Avila hit seventh in the lineup and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. The results weren't as important as the fact that he was back in the lineup. The Tigers are hoping for a healthy Avila during this final week and into the post season.

Avila, in his sixth Major League season, is batting .221 with 11 home runs and 47 RBI this season. He enjoyed his best season in 2011 when he hit .295 with 19 home runs and 82 RBI. Avila is a career .247 hitter with 62 home runs and 269 RBI.
