Tigers Injury Update: Miguel Cabrera has bone spur in ankle

By on 9/08/2014 09:30:00 AM

The ankle discomfort which reigning AL MVP Miguel Cabrera has been dealing with is the result of a bone spur, reports Jason Beck of Manager Brad Ausmus confirmed to reporters, including Beck, that the Detroit Tigers star did indeed have a spur in his right ankle which may require offseason surgery, although that has not been confirmed yet.

Ausmus was responding to a report from ESPN's Buster Olney, who stated on Baseball Tonight that Cabrera had bone spurs and that surgery was likely. The Tigers manager disputed Olney's suggestion that surgery was the probable course of action at this stage, as he told Beck:
"...whether it’s rest that will help the inflammation or the irritation go down in the area, or whether it’s something that has to be done surgically, we don’t know that.”

Cabrera reportedly felt discomfort again when scoring during Sunday's win over the Giants and is likely to DH on Monday. The injury does not seem to have hampered his production at the plate of late, as he is hitting .500 in 30 September at-bats, with five home runs.
