Tigers Injury Update: Rajai Davis sits after early exit

By on 9/28/2014 10:15:00 AM

Detroit Tigers speedster Rajai Davis will not play in game 162 today after coming out of Saturday's loss to the Minnesota Twins with what was reported by James Schmehl of to be "a Grade 1 sprain of the pubic symphysis". Schmehl tweeted on Sunday morning that Davis would not start, with Ezequiel Carrera playing center instead:

The Tigers still need to win to guarantee first place in the AL Central, with Kansas City just one game back after blowing the chance to draw level on Saturday. The concern for Detroit will be whether Davis is ready to start in the playoffs, or even a potential game 163 or wild card game if Sunday does not work out as planned. Manager Brad Ausmus told Schmehl that Davis was feeling 'pretty good' after the game but admitted running could be a different matter.

Davis has hit .282/.320/.401 in 2014, stealing 36 bases and tying his career-high for home runs with 8. He has essentially been the Tigers' full-time centerfielder since Austin Jackson was traded to Seattle as part of the David Price deal. While not outstanding with the bat, Davis is certainly better than Carrera or Don Kelly both at the plate and on the basepaths, and arguably there is not much difference defensively, so the Tigers would certainly like to have him in the lineup for the postseason if at all possible.
