Twins Injury Update: Danny Santana, Glen Perkins

By on 9/09/2014 01:45:00 PM

The Minnesota Twins are hoping to get center fielder Danny Santana and closer Glen Perkins back in the next few days, reports Rhett Bollinger of

Santana suffered a lower back strain while making a throw from center field in the second inning of Saturday’s game and was held out of the lineup on Sunday. Manager Ron Gardenhire said it was just a “tweak” in Santana’s left side and that he should be available soon.

The 23-year-old rookie is off to a great start in the majors, posting 2.3 WAR in 84 games. Aaron Hicks took over for Santana in center on Saturday and got the start on Sunday.

Perkins hasn’t pitched since Thursday as he recovers from neck stiffness. An MRI revealed no structural damage, so he should also be back soon.

For the second consecutive year, Perkins is having one of the best seasons among closers in the American League. Perkins has a 2.88 ERA (2.41 FIP) with 33 saves and a 9.86 K/9 ratio in 59.1 innings.

Minnesota was off on Monday and it's unclear if either Santana or Perkins will be able to play Tuesday when the Twins open up a three-game series against the Cleveland Indians.
