White Sox Injury Update: Jake Petricka exits with back stiffness

By on 9/28/2014 10:45:00 AM

Jake Petricka failed to record an out in a save opportunity for the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night as he exited with a stiff lower back, as CSN's Dan Hayes tweeted:
Petricka walked the only batter he faced, Alex Gordon, before giving way to Javy Guerra. Guerra allowed Gordon to score on a Mike Moustakas single but ultimately held on to get the save in a 5-4 win that prevented Kansas City from joining the Tigers atop the AL Central. There has been no indication of the team as to the severity of Petricka's injury.

If the White Sox do get a save opportunity on Sunday, it seems likely to go to Zach Putnam, who has been in somewhat of a closer role timeshare with Petricka in any case. Petricka has 14 saves this season, with Putnam collecting six. Matt Lindstrom also had six before getting hurt, while Ronald Belisario picked up eight but performed so poorly he could not hold on to the role. Petricka and Putnam have been two of the stronger performers in an awful White Sox bullpen, so Chicago will need to find more arms like them to have a real chance of consistently holding leads in 2015.
