Yankees Injury Update: Brett Gardner out with abdominal pain

By on 9/08/2014 08:00:00 PM

The Yankees will start a three game series against the Tampa Bay Rays tomorrow night from the Bronx, and it isn't clear whether or not LF Brett Gardner will be ready to play. Gardner hasn't played since Friday night against the Royals, where he first started feeling abdominal pain.

Jamal Collier reports that Gardner feels like the injury is getting better, but could worsen if he was to play. Collier noted that it is similar to the pain he felt earlier this season in Cleveland, which caused to to sit out a game.

It would be wise of the Yankees to let Gardner rest until he knows he is 100%. Gardner is one of the Yanks' best hitters, posting a .269/.342/.442  slash line with a career high in home runs (16) and RBIs (56), along with 8 triples and 19 stolen bases in 24 attempts. If the Yankees were to lose Gardner, it would severely hurt their playoff odds, which are already at only 1.6%.

The Yankees are currently 73-68 and are 4.5 games behind the Tigers and Mariners for the second wild card spot.
