49ers Injury Update: NaVorro Bowman return 'later than sooner'

By on 10/08/2014 12:30:00 PM

In the NFC Championship Game in 2013, the San Francisco 49ers failed to secure a spot in the Super Bowl, and their top defensive player, NaVorro Bowman, suffered ACL and MCL injuries. He was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform-list and is eligible to return in week six.

Although he is eligible, his return is a considerable amount of time away according to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio as reported by Matt Barrows of When asked if Bowman will return this season, Fangio said he believes at some point he will play before the year is done.

It has only been nine months since he suffered the injuries and Matt Barrows also reported he has had no roadblocks in his recovery. There is no need to rush him back until fully healthy though, as the 49ers rank second in the NFL in yards allowed per game. Bowman will need several weeks of practice to get back into game shape once he is able to get on the field at full speed.

Linebacker Aldon Smith is eligible to return from his nine game suspension for violating the league's personal-conduct and substance-abuse policies on November 16th, which is expected to be before Bowman makes his season debut. The return of these two stars will be a boost for an already impressive 49ers defense.
