Capitals Injury Update: Mike Green will not be in the lineup tonight

By on 10/09/2014 01:45:00 PM

The Washington Capitals defense will be shorthanded tonight when they open their 2014-2015 season against the Montreal Canadiens. According to NBC Sports ProHockeyTalk, veteran defenseman Mike Green is being held out with an upper-body injury that is not considered to be serious.

Green is being held out tonight by coach Barry Trotz in order to provide Green more time to rest and heal. Since this is the first game of the season, Trotz saw no reason to rush the former All-Star back and potentially aggravate the injury further. Green will be replaced in the lineup by second year defenseman Nate Schmidt who will be paired with veteran Jack Hillen.

Green is entering his 10th season in the NHL, all with Washington. He is a valuable member of the Capitals finishing second twice in the Norris Trophy voting in 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. He has contributed 315 points including 103 goals during his tenure with the Capitals.
