Cardinals Injury Update: Adam Wainwright unlikely to go on short rest in Game 4

By on 10/05/2014 02:30:00 PM

Entering Sunday's action, the best-of-five division series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers is the only one guaranteed to see a Game 4. Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright did not fare as well as his manager, Mike Matheny, had hoped in Game 1, allowing six runs in 4 1/3 innings. He could return for Game 4, but Matheny has called that unlikely according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The short rest for Wainwright would follow an 11-day layoff that ranged from his last regular-season start on September 22 until Game 1 on October 3. The inconsistency of rest combined with 107 pitches Thursday could irritate Wainwright's elbow more than the Cardinals need. Extending him to Game 5 on Thursday (if necessary) would give him five days of rest rather than three, putting him back into his normal routine.

As it stands now, the Cardinals' John Lackey will face L.A.'s Hyun-Jin Ryu in Game 3, and Shelby Miller will pitch Game 4 against a yet unnamed Dodgers starter.

Game 3 will air on MLB Network Monday at a yet unspecified time. Game 4 will air on FOX Sports 1 Tuesday, also at an yet undetermined time.
