Cardinals Injury Update: Adam Wainwright set to start Game 1 despite health concerns

By on 10/08/2014 05:15:00 PM

The St. Louis Cardinals are planning to start Adam Wainwright in Game 1 of the NLCS against the San Francisco Giants despite some concern about the health of his elbow, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Wainwright felt discomfort in his elbow after Game 1 in the NLDS and has been pitching through tendinitis since June. He planned on starting a potential Game 5 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, so the extra rest should only help.

The Cardinals have had Lance Lynn prepare as though he were starting the game just in case Wainwright needs to be lifted earlier than expected.

Wainwright struggled in Game 1 of the NLDS, allowing six runs on 11 hits in 4.1 innings, but was one of the best pitchers in the National League during the regular season. The 33-year-old posted a 2.38 ERA (2.88 FIP) in 32 starts this season.

St. Louis dispatched the Dodgers in four games to advance to their fourth consecutive NLCS, which begins Friday at Busch Stadium.
