Devils Injury Update: Martin Havlat wants to play tonight against Rangers

By on 10/21/2014 04:58:00 PM

New Jersey Devils winger Martin Havlat is hoping to play tonight against the rival New York Rangers. That isn't exactly news. The news is that he wants to play four days after receiving 55 stitches to close a gash that starts at the bridge of his nose and wraps around his upper lip and corner of his mouth.

As reported by Rich Chere of, Havlat was the recipient of an ill-timed push from behind by Washington Capitals forward Jason Chimera. Havlat's face went straight into the elbow of referee Darcy Burchell which in-turn caused Havlat's visor to lacerate his face. Havlat jokingly acknowledged that his lip was cut all the way through saying, "I know it was hanging out there on the ice. That didn't feel right. It looks good now, huh?" It was also reported that Chimera texted Havlat after the game but the 14 year veteran didn't blame Chimera at all.

Havlat is entering his first season with the Devils after spending the last three in San Jose. He has amassed 582 career points including 237 goals in his 14 NHL seasons with Ottawa, Chicago, Minnesota, San Jose and New Jersey.
