Ducks Injury Update: Cam Fowler hopeful he will be on road trip with the team to start season

Anaheim Ducks' defenseman Cam Fowler suffered a lower-body injury in practice last Thursday, but the team anticipates having him back on the ice when they open the season next week according to prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com and the Ducks' website.

Fowler, a 22-year-old former first-round draft pick, had to be helped off the ice after taking a hard fall.  Head coach Bruce Boudreau called the injury "a freak, freak thing", noting that trainers said it "wasn't too bad." Boudreau added that Fowler is "hopeful to be playing" when the Ducks open the season with four games on the road.

The Ducks will need all the defensive help they can muster when they play their first game October 9 against a Pittsburgh Penguins team that finished 5th in the NHL in goals scored last season.  Fowler missed time last year with an MCL sprain but still managed 36 points.  His +/- of 15 put him in the top 25 among NHL defensemen in 2013-2014.  The Ducks open their season also having question marks regarding the health of wingers Dany Heatley and Kyle Palmieri.
