Flames Injury Update: Sam Bennett likely to have shoulder surgery

By on 10/08/2014 12:55:00 PM

The Calgary Flames organization was the recipient of some disappointing news regarding their 2014 first round draft pick, Sam Bennett, yesterday. According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, the fourth overall pick in this year's draft is weighing his options regarding possible surgery on an injured shoulder.

Bennett aggravated the lingering shoulder injury during the preseason with the Flames but battled through it last season with the Ontario Hockey League's Kingston Frontenacs. If Bennett and the Flames decide to opt for surgery and not rehab, it will likely sideline the 18-year-old center for several months. Surgery would also likely eliminate Bennett from consideration for Canada's World Junior team.

Bennett had a great season in the OHL last year tallying 91 points, including 36 goals in only 57 games. He also contributed nine points including five goals in seven playoff games before Kingston was eliminated in the OHL playoffs by the Peterborough Petes.
