Giants Injury Update: Victor Cruz suffers torn patellar tendon

By on 10/13/2014 10:52:00 AM

The New York Giants star wide receiver Victor Cruz was carted off the field Sunday night.  Paul Schwartz reports Cruz suffered a patellar tendon rupture while attempting to catch a pass from Eli Manning in the third-quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles.  Cruz was observed to grab for his right knee while still in mid-air after the ball tipped off his hands.  The injury is a crushing blow for a Giants team who has struggled to move the ball down field as well as losing one of the teams most popular players.

Players for both teams surrounded Cruz after the injury and many came over to console him as he was carted off the field in obvious pain.  Patellar tendon injuries are season-ending and it is likely Cruz will undergo surgery pending orthopedic evaluation.  Tendon ruptures are becoming more common in the NFL as players subject themselves to more explosive movements.  While not as common as Achilles tendon ruptures, patellar tendon ruptures are no less devastating for an athlete as it may affect their strength and speed.

Dan Graziano reports rookie receiver Odell Beckham Jr.n will likely be the beneficiary of increased passing targets with Cruz sidelined.  Since 2011, Cruz had been the most productive receiver with regards to touchdowns scored from the slot position with nineteen.
