Islanders Injury Update: Thomas Hickey Returns to Practice After Cut to Face from Skate

By on 10/22/2014 12:37:00 PM

Tuesday night saw another potentially gruesome injury occur in the NHL. Thomas Hickey  defenseman from the New York Islanders, was struck in the face by the skate of Toronto forward Mike SantorelliChris Peters of cbssports.com reported that Hickey immediately left the ice and did not return to the game.

Mike Hickey took an awkward fall trying to catch Santorelli against the boards early in the third period. Video of the injury is here and you can see how random the circumstances were that caused the injury. This year we have already had Patrik Nemeth  sustain a season ending injury because of being struck by a skate. It appears that Hickey avoided a long term injury as he returned to practice Wednesday.

The Islanders lost to the Maple Leafs 5-2 on Tuesday. Their next game is on Thursday in Boston.
