Lightning Injury Update: Victor Hedman leaves game against Canucks with upper-body injury

Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman left Saturday night's game against the Vancouver Canucks and did not return. As per Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times, he's out with an upper-body injury, apparently a hand injury.

The team has not confirmed what the exact nature of the injury is. However, replays show that he blocked several shots on his last shift, including one that appeared to hit his hand.

Hedman, the team's top defenseman, is heading back to Tampa to get re-evaluated. He will miss the rest of the Lightning's current road trip, which ends next Saturday in Minnesota. Their next home game is on October 28 against Arizona.

"It's unreal how these things happen but he is going to go back to Tampa and get re-evaluated, said head coach Jon Cooper. "We're hoping for the best, I'm just going to leave it at that."

Through five games this season, Hedman has three goals and four assists. He's tied for the league lead in goals and points among defenseman.

Hedman has really stepped up his game since last season. Since January 1 of this year, no defenseman has more points than him. This is obviously a major loss for the team.
