Maple Leafs Injury Update: Franson hopeful to return Saturday

By on 10/07/2014 08:30:00 PM

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Cody Franson expects to be in the lineup Saturday against the Pittsburgh Penguins, as reported by Stephen Whyno of The Canadian Press. He will not be in the lineup on Wednesday in the team's season opener against the Montreal Canadiens.

Franson is currently out with a knee injury. However, he has not missed too much time.

Last season, the 27-year-old defenseman played in 79 games. He scored five goals and added 28 assists. He averaged close to 21 minutes per game. He saw time on the powerplay and the penalty kill. He was also ranked second in the league in hits with 282.

Franson signed a one-year deal with the Maple Leafs over the summer, as he was looking for a big increase in salary. By accepting another contract season, he believes he can have a breakout year in order to obtain a large long-term deal next summer. First, he would need to get himself healthy.
