Nuggets Injury Updates: JaVale McGee far from return, other Nuggets much closer

The Denver Nuggets have struggled to a 1-3 start this preseason following a season in which they won 36 games, fourth in the Northwest Division. The main problem for the Nuggets last season was a defense which allowed 106.2 points per game. One issue was the absence of center JaVale McGee, who missed all but five games last year due to a stress fracture in his left tibia. It appears that the Nuggets will have to wait a while longer for McGee, who is not close to returning.

As reported by Christopher Dempsey of The Denver Post,  the Nuggets have four players returning from surgery, with  Danilo Gallinari, Nate Robinson and J.J. Hickson close to returning. Unfortunately, JaVale McGee is still a question mark for the season opener.

Coach Brian Shaw feels that McGee could be ready for the season opener, but the fact that McGee is still feeling pain is making the team cautious with him.  With Hickson also hurting, Timofey Mozgov should see significant minutes at center.

McGee, in his seventh NBA season, averaged seven points and 3.4 rebounds in just five games last season with the Nuggets. The veteran center has played for the Wizards and Nuggets and has career averages of 8.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game.
