Packers Injury Update: Sam Shields, Tramon Williams, Jamari Lattimore

By on 10/13/2014 11:00:00 AM

The Green Bay Packers defense stumbled some in the second half against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. The did come up with a big third down stop to allow the Packers offense to drive down the field in the final two minutes for a dramatic win though. They did this with several starters sidelined. Cornerbacks Sam Shields and Tramon Williams and linebacker Jamari Lattimore all suffered injuries on Sunday and were unable to return.

Sam Shields suffered what appeared to be a freak injury. He came up lame after jogging out of a defensive huddle. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Shields was told by doctors that he suffered a patellar tendon injury. The severity of the injury will be determined during further testing. When asked if it was torn, Shields said no. "I doubt it," he said. "I don't think so." This injury does cause some concern for the Packers and his availability going forward will be determined following more tests.

One play after Shields injury, fellow cornerback Tramon Williams also went down and was unable to return. He injured his left ankle when linebacker Brad Jones fell on the back his legs. Coach Mike McCarthy did not release any further details of Williams' injury, but the fact that he was sidelined for the rest of the game is not a great sign, also according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

As for linebacker Jamari Lattimore, who was making his fifth straight start after taking over for the unimpressive Brad Jones after Jones went down with an injury in week one, he suffered a neck injury and was unable to return. Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports it was following his missed block in punt formation which allowed the Dolphins to block a Tim Masthay punt in the first quarter. He walked off the field under his own power and was taken to the locker room.

The Packers defense has struggled overall for most of the season and the loss of these key players could lead to more struggles. Cornerbacks Davon House and Casey Hayward did play well in replace of Williams and Shields down the stretch for the Packers defense.
