Penguins Injury Update: Malkin participates in Sunday skate, timetable is unknown

By on 10/06/2014 10:28:00 AM

Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins skated for the third straight day at training camp Sunday. An exact return date to the lineup is still up in the air, according to NBC Sports and the Pens' website.

The fact that Malkin is skating at all shows progress on an offseason lower-body injury we reported on last week.  The 28-year-old center is a former 2nd overall draft pick, league MVP, and five-time All-Star.

Malkin hasn't managed to stay healthy for a full season since 2008-2009, but he has been an integral part of the Pittsburgh Penguins' offensive performance whenever he has been on the ice.  He contributed 72 points last season in just 60 games.

The Pittsburgh Penguins open the season Thursday night when they welcome the Anaheim Ducks to the Consol Energy Center.  Head coach Mike Johnston said Malkin would need to get through team drills in Tuesday's practice setback-free to be considered for the opening night lineup.
