Rangers Injury Update: Dan Boyle breaks hand, out 4-6 weeks

New York Rangers defenseman Dan Boyle is expected to miss four to six weeks with a broken hand, as reported by Larry Brooks of the New York Post. The injury occurred Thursday night in the team's season opener against the St.Louis Blues, while blocking a shot.

Boyle joined the Rangers in the offseason after spending the last six seasons with the San Jose Sharks, signing a 2-year deal with the team. He played 14:01 in the game before leaving.

The 38-year-old veteran blue-liner played in 75 games for the Sharks in 2013-14. He scored 12 goals and added 24 assists. He averaged 21:16 TOI and saw a lot of powerplay time. Of his 36 points, 18 came on the man advantage.

The Rangers were hoping Boyle could add some firepower to their offense and some veteran leadership in their dressing room. However, all that will have to wait. It's expected the team will call up another defenseman to take his roster spot, but Matt Hunwick may be the winner of Boyle's spot in the lineup.

UPDATE: The Rangers have recalled defenseman Mike Kostka.
