Rangers Injury Update: Kevin Hayes considered day-to-day with shoulder injury

By on 10/09/2014 12:30:00 AM

New York Rangers' rookie winger Kevin Hayes will travel with the team to open the season but is day-to-day with a shoulder injury sustained before the final preseason game, according to

Hayes, 22, is finally on an NHL roster after being drafted 24th overall by Chicago in 2010.  The divisive prospect refused to sign with the Blackhawks and became a free agent this past August when his draft rights expired.  He has spent the last four years at Boston College where he won the National Championship in 2012.

Hayes could be the main beneficiary of the fractured fibula that will keep Rangers' center Derek Stepan out of the lineup on long-term IR for four to six weeks.  Stepan's absence allowed New York to keep another forward on their 23-man roster, namely Kevin Hayes.

The Rangers open the season Thursday at St. Louis, then travel to Columbus before heading back to New York next week.
